We are Prepared

Be Prepared

When disasters occur, preparation and strong partnerships make all the difference.

Recently, St John Ambulance NSW took part in a large-scale Evacuation Centre training exercise on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Local volunteers and members of St John’s specialist Emergency Response Team worked alongside government and community agencies to simulate the setup and operation of an evacuation centre during a bushfire emergency.

The exercise tested large-scale emergency response capability, with a focus on coordination, communication and command structures under realistic conditions. Scenarios included managing displaced residents and responding to simulated medical incidents, helping agencies practice how they would work together during a real emergency.

A key component was the establishment of a treatment triage and medical centre alongside NSW Health. St John volunteers conducted patient assessments, delivered first aid and worked closely with other emergency services to coordinate care.
The exercise was led by NSW Department of Communities and Justice and involved agencies including NSW State Emergency Service, NSW Police Force and Fire and Rescue NSW.

Exercises like this help strengthen relationships between agencies and ensure emergency services are ready to respond when communities need them most.
Following the exercise, participating organisations will review the lessons learned to further strengthen procedures and preparedness for future emergencies.
