The Pulse – May 2026

Dear Team,

The last month has been an exceptionally busy period for St John NSW with our teams providing event medical services to our largest event of the year, the Sydney Royal Easter Show, the Hawkesbury Show, ANZAC Day services, the Runway running event at the new airport and many other community events across the state. True to form, our volunteers showed up in force providing excellent patient care.

On 25 April, St John members attended ANZAC Day commemorations across NSW to pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who have served our country in times of conflict. 746 members from 42 divisions attended more than 100 dawn services, honouring a tradition that runs deep within our organisation and serving over 2238 hours in keeping these events safe. The connection between St John and the ANZAC spirit is a longstanding one, with members serving in both World Wars and in every conflict since, a legacy we carry with great pride.

It was also wonderful to see our volunteers partnering with Girls on Fire Australia and fellow emergency services agencies to deliver the Life Ready Fire & Resilience Program at Freshwater Senior Campus. This exercise was a fantastic example of what can be achieved through multi-agency collaboration and community education, furthering our credentials as the medical reserve.

We celebrated National Volunteer Week, a time to reflect on the remarkable contributions our volunteers make every day. In 2025, St John NSW members served over 290,000 hours, provided much needed medical coverage at more than 3,000 community events, and treated close to 10,000 patients. Those numbers are extraordinary, but they only tell part of the story. We are grateful to all the families who sacrifice time with their respective St John member to allow them to serve. Thank you for your service.

Lastly, I want to warmly invite members and their families to attend the St John’s Day Inter-Faith Celebration at our Macquarie Park State Operations Centre on Sunday, 28 June 2026 at 11.00am. Join us as we celebrate the feast day of our patron saint through an inclusive, multicultural service led by State Chaplain Fr Andrew Doohan, followed by family fun, food and community. We look forward to bringing members together for this special occasion. Please RSVP by 17 June HERE.

Royal Easter Show 2026 Wrap Up

What an incredible 12 days at the 2026 Sydney Royal Easter Show! Once again, our volunteers showed up to demonstrate why we are the trusted name in event health services, delivering outstanding care to more than 800,000 showgoers across one of the state’s most popular annual events.

Girls On Fire

St John NSW recently partnered with fellow emergency services agencies to run the Life Ready Fire & Resilience Program at Freshwater Senior Campus, delivering practical, hands-on learning to high school students. Volunteers delivered interactive workshops, equipping participants with the skills and confidence to respond effectively in emergencies.

St John Ambulance NSW Honours ANZAC Day

On ANZAC Day, hundreds of our members across the state rose before dawn to honour the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country.  Attending more than 100 local ceremonies across the state, our volunteers upheld a proud and long-standing tradition of care and community service.

St John Ambulance NSW Delivers at the 2026 Hawkesbury Show

Across three action-packed days St John volunteer and BERT teams braved foggy early mornings, and long shifts to deliver frontline first aid services and a community engagement activation to ensure that the more than 30,000 visitors to the show had a safe and enjoyable experience. Over the course of the weekend our teams treated 72 patients, with only five cases requiring hospital transport, a true demonstration of the skill, dedication and preparedness of every volunteer who showed up.

Celebrating our Volunteers During National Volunteer Week 2026

Last week we celebrated National Volunteer Week, which was a wonderful opportunity to pause, reflect, and recognise the extraordinary contribution of all volunteers across the country. For St John NSW, it was a chance to celebrate the dedicated people whose service truly defines our organisation.

Nicole Scholten

When I first reached out about joining St John, I didn’t really know what the cadet program was. I think I had always seen St John around at local events, and thought it could be a nice extracurricular activity, little did I know it would become so much more. By 2022, I started attending training nights, and everything took off from there.

My favourite part about being a cadet is the amount of support you have around you. Through the youth program, I have met people who have mentored me and given me the confidence to take on any challenge. Having the support that you have access to as a St John cadet at such a young age is a transformative honour, and it is incredibly touching to see the empowered youth of St John becoming resilient, capable and confident communities.

What is your favourite hobby?

My favourite hobby is making music. I love all the nuanced feelings that come with it, and I am obsessed with playing chamber music with friends. There are moments when you lock eyes with your fellow musicians, right before the music swells with drama and emotion, and the energy just bounces between you guys, anticipating release!

Would you rather have unlimited snacks but no desserts for the rest of your life, or unlimited desserts but no savory snacks?

Considering the wise words “you can never be too full for dessert” I will have to pick the unlimited dessert! That way I can try more of the delicious meals the world has to offer, without worrying about the space the dessert/snack took away. I also just don’t think I could live life without ice cream. There are few problems in this world that ice cream cannot fix!
