Participation in the 2025 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival was a celebration of more than just vibrant colours, dazzling costumes, and unforgettable moments, it was a statement of St John’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. It is important for us to celebrate the differences that make each person who they are, and we want members and all who connect with St John NSW to feel that way.
The 2025 Mardi Gras marked a historic first for St John NSW: it was the first time St John NSW was able also to take part in the parade.
This year’s festival allowed our members to engage with other emergency services and we were able to deepen our connection with the communities we serve. These vital connections help us share best practices and reinforce our collective care and service to all people.
We proudly took on the critical role of providing event medical support: 38 members were deployed to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the thousands of festival-goers. Our teams were deployed across 8 First Aid posts, a Medicab team, and two Relief teams, supported by our Logistics and Command team.
Throughout the day, our volunteers were ready to respond, treating 24 patients, including 6 ambulance transports. Our presence and quick response times ensured the wellbeing of Mardi Gras participants, allowing the fun and celebration to go on safely.
As St John NSW continues to grow and evolve, our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion remains at the core of our mission. Participation in events like Mardi Gras provides an opportunity for us not only to serve our community but also to make a clear stand that St John is a place that fosters belonging for all. We are proud of the work we do, the people we serve, and the inclusive culture we have.
This year’s Mardi Gras was a great success, and we can’t wait for 2026 as we continue to celebrate diversity and inclusion.
“I joined the St John cadets at the start of the year. I enjoy being a cadet. But, now seeing St John out at the Mardi Gras, it makes me super proud and gives me hope.” – Youth Member, Bankstown (who approached the parade team from the crowd)
“I felt really proud to be marching with St John as it was a way to fully embrace two of the most important parts of my life: my identity and my ability to help others. I think it was so important to show the community that not only are we here to help everyone, we’re here with full acceptance of them too.” – M
