Child Safety Policy Update
Following a period of consultation late last year, we have reviewed and updated the St John NSW Child Safety Policy in line with legislation and best practice.
Key updates include:
- Strengthened Statement of Commitment, including adherence to the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations
- Inclusion of the 10 National Principles within the Statement of Policy
- Expanded definitions (including adult, child abuse, contractor and the National Principles)
- Clearer reporting requirements, including explicit direction to report serious matters directly to Police and/or the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) via the Child Protection Helpline or eReport, and then advise the Lead Child Wellbeing Officer
- Inclusion of organisational legal obligations
- Stronger confidentiality requirements relating to child safety disclosures
- Clarified Board and Executive responsibilities for child safety incident monitoring
- A specified future review date for transparency
The updated policy is now available on the Members’ Intranet.
We will also be updating the 2026 Child Safety online training module to reflect these changes, which members will be required to complete during the year.

Preserving Our History – Support the Archives
The St John NSW Archives plays a vital role in preserving the history of our organisation for future generations.
While we hold many State-level paper records, we currently have limited historical divisional records, operational equipment and uniforms. As divisions celebrate milestone anniversaries or prepare special events, we are often asked for historical materials, and unfortunately, we frequently have little to share!
If your division is:
- Relocating
- Changing leadership
- Undertaking a clean-out
- Preparing for an anniversary or celebration
Please consider donating historical divisional records, operational equipment, uniforms or other relevant items to the Archives. Every contribution – large or small – helps build a richer and more complete record of our shared history.
A short flyer outlining the role of the Archives is available to share with divisions. Collection of potential donations can be arranged at any time.
It is important that we leave a meaningful and accurate record of our time with St John for future generations to learn from and be inspired by.
For further information please contact John Ward, Director of Ceremonies NSW: John.ward@stjohnnsw.com.au
