City2Surf: Rain, Hail or Shine

On Sunday, more than 200 St John Ambulance members proudly served at this year’s City2Surf, providing vital medical support across one of Sydney’s largest and most complex public events.

With 76,000 runners on the day, the scale of the event was immense. Behind the scenes and on the ground, 270 St John NSW volunteers worked tirelessly from the city to the iconic finish at Bondi Beach – spanning the 14-kilometre course.

We had 16 medical posts along the route and five at Bondi, supported by specialist teams including Comms, Logistics, BERT (Bicycle Emergency Response Team), MERT (Medical Emergency Response Team), and our scoop teams (who really had to brave the weather!). St John NSW also had representation at the Government Control Centre in Surry Hills and the Ambulance Operations Centre at Homebush, ensuring seamless coordination with other emergency services.

Despite the heavy rain soaking our volunteers and turning Bondi into a mudslide, our people demonstrated true grit – some of the posts even had water running through the tent.

What truly stood out was the spirit of our volunteers. Even our young cadets remained at their posts in the pouring rain, demonstrating resilience and dedication towards the responsibility entrusted to them.

This City2Surf was a major team effort. From the warehouse and logistics crews packing trucks, the command and comms teams, to those on the ground, every single person played a vital role in making the day a success.

To every one of our volunteers: thank you. Your dedication, professionalism, and teamwork embody the very best of St John. This year’s City2Surf once again showed that we are always there—rain, hail, or shine.

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, St John will again play a key role at the upcoming Sydney Marathon. This is another major event where our presence is vital. We encourage all members to get involved, whether on the course or behind the scenes in supporting roles. It’s a fantastic opportunity to put your skills into action and continue making a real difference in our community.
